Michael Sam has been cut by the St. Louis Rams.
The move happened on Saturday, as the NFL team announced its final 53-man roster for the upcoming regular season.
Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in league history, was placed on waivers at 4 p.m. Eastern.
The NFL’s other 31 teams will have 24 hours to put in a claim on the defensive end, who could be signed by another franchise as early as Sunday.
If he does not wind up on a 53-man roster, he could conceivably be brought back to the Rams for the team’s practice squad.
Sam is trying to become the first openly gay NFL player.
