In the wake of her death on Saturday, Whitney Houston’s final, up-and-down decade is again the subject of theories and judgments from commentators everywhere.

But no outside observer can offer the same perspective on her personal crises as Houston herself.

In 2002, the performer sat down for what became an infamous interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC News.

At one point, Sawyer asks Houston about various drugs, “If you had to name the devil, the biggest devil among them?…”

The singer replies, “That would be me… nobody makes me do anything I don’t want to do. It’s my decision. So the biggest devil is me.”

It was painful to watch 10 years ago.

Now it’s even more tragic.
