Another Sharknado is coming!

Syfy has officially greenlit a sequel to its notorious disaster movie, which took a bite out of social media when it premiered last week.

The second installment moves the action from Los Angeles to New York, where — you guessed it — another tornado full of sharks invades the city.

It’s not yet known whether original stars Tara Reid and Ian Ziering will return, though both have expressed interest.

“Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel,” said Thomas Vitale, executive vice president of programming and original movies for Syfy, in a statement.

He continued, “What we can guarantee is that Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun. We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.”

But that’s not all.

Syfy is also inviting fans to name the new movie.

Viewers can tweet their suggestions to @SyfyMovies using #Sharknado.

Sharknado Sequel On The Way?

4:27 pm, July 12th, 2013

(SyFy)

Sharknado has captured America’s heart — and now there’s big buzz online about a potential sequel.

The Syfy original TV movie about a tornado of sharks raining mayhem and death from above became a social media sensation on Thursday, because it was about a tornado of sharks!

Tara Reid and Ian Ziering starred in the over-the-top event, with the broadcast generating a staggering 5,000 tweets per minute at its peak, even before Ziering’s character got swallowed by an airborne shark and cut his way out with a chainsaw.

(Seriously.)

With Twitter users sending #Sharknado into the stratosphere, a giddy Syfy announced on Friday that “given the enormous popular demand,” the channel will air a special encore presentation on Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Set those DVRs.

But will there be a sequel?

As of now, a second installment has NOT been formally greenlit, although multiple reports have Syfy considering the possibility.

Meanwhile, the producers behind Sharknado tell The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s really Syfy’s call but we certainly would do it.”

For what it’s worth, the production company is also behind such hits as 2-Headed Shark and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus.

Stay tuned.
