PETA is joining the backlash against “Duck Dynasty” in the wake of star Phil Robertson’s comments about homosexuality and race.

As Gossip Cop previously reported, the duck hunter has been suspended from the A&E series after telling GQ he believes being gay is a “sin,” and compared it to bestiality.

On Thursday, in a statement provided to Gossip Cop, PETA says it “wants A&E to do more than suspend one of the characters on ’Duck Dynasty’ for damning gays.”

It continues:

“We call on the channel to challenge the entire crew of duck slayers to ignore Sarah Palin’s self-serving slap on the back for spewing hate speech and deny that they are as anti-gay as they are anti-animal. All people who consider themselves followers of Christ should follow all His teachings—and that includes showing mercy, compassion, and kindness to all of God’s creation, human and nonhuman alike. What’s ‘sinful’ is hating people and animals. PETA asks everyone who consider themselves to be Christian to reject hate speech and call for this show’s cancellation.”

The show, however, is not without its supporters.

A number of conservative pundits have defended Robertson and his remarks, while fans have started a “IStandWithPhil” petition to get him back on the show.

Katy Perry has angered the activists at PETA with the video for her song “Roar” because she used trained animals.

In the footage, Perry is seen interacting with a number of animals, including a chimp and an elephant.

PETA says in a statement furnished to Gossip Cop, “Animals used for entertainment endure horrific cruelty and suffer from extreme confinement and violent training methods. They often become stressed and anxious when hauled around and forced into unfamiliar or frightening situations.”

The organization adds that it believes the animals used for the video came from a company that has “been inspected by the US Department of Agriculture 22 times since 2001.”

Dax Shepard Turns Down PETA’s Sexiest Male Vegetarian of the Year Award

Dax Shepard says he can’t accept PETA’s Sexiest Male Vegetarian of the Year Award — because he’s no longer a vegetarian.

The organization recently crowned Shepard and fiancée Kristen Bell as the 2013 male/female winners of their annual online poll, but the “Parenthood” star took to Twitter on Thursday to decline the honor.

“I’m really flattered to be named ‘Sexiest Vegetarian’ with @IMKristenBell, but sadly I can’t accept in good conscience because I eat chicken,” tweeted Shepard.

He continued, “I was vegan for a year, but that ended 6 months ago. I aspire to be more like @IMKristenBell , but I’m not there yet.”

Currently, PETA’s website — which denotes that the “winner was chosen by PETA based on several factors, including vote count” — only lists Bell as the winner, and Shepard is no longer listed in the group of eligible males.
