Paris Hilton did NOT confuse Nelson Mandela with Martin Luther King, Jr. on Twitter following Mandela’s death, despite a fake “tweet” that spread on Thursday.

Shortly after the South African icon died, celebrities around the world began reacting to the news.

A Photoshopped tweet — fake but made to look like it had been written by Hilton — began circulated, and read: “RIP Nelson Mandela. Your ‘I Have A Dream’ speech was so inspiring. An amazing man.”

Except that was NOT actually Hilton — just a hoax, apparently started by the @DeletedTweets account.

The real Hilton was on a flight to Miami when news about Mandela broke, and when she learned about the phony tweet making the rounds, she was understandably upset.

Nelson Mandela’s death has inspired reactions from celebrities around the world, and now Morgan Freeman, who played the South African icon on screen, has paid tribute.

In a statement to Gossip Cop, the Invictus actor says, “Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century. Nelson Mandela was a man of  incomparable honor, unconquerable strength, and unyielding resolve — a saint to many, a hero to all who treasure liberty, freedom and the dignity of humankind.”

Freeman adds, “As we remember his triumphs, let us, in his memory, not just reflect on how far we’ve come, but on how far we have to go. Madiba may no longer be with us, but his journey continues on with me and with all of us.”

Nelson Mandela Released From Hospital; NOT Dead Despite Internet Rumor

9:47 am, September 1st, 2013

Nelson Mandela was released from the hospital after three months of treatment on Sunday — contrary to a widespread Internet rumor that claimed he was dead.

The ailing 95-year-old former President of South Africa is still in critical condition, but doctors believe he will be able to receive sufficient intensive care at his own residence.

Mandela was hospitalized with a lung infection back in June.

Early Sunday, a false rumor alleging that former U.S. President George H.W. Bush had supposedly confirmed Mandela’s death circulated on Twitter.

It is not the first time a death hoax has spread about Mandela.

But while Mandela remains in poor health, he is very much alive — and home for the first time in 12 weeks.
