Oscar de la Renta has died. The fashion designer, who created the gown worn by Amal Alamuddin for her wedding to George Clooney, passed away on Monday after a lengthy battle with cancer. De la Renta was 82.

The fashion icon first gained fame for being the designer of choice for Jacqueline Kennedy. He subsequently dressed other first ladies, including Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush.

De la Renta was also a favorite on the red carpet among numerous celebrities, including Kristen StewartOprahPenelope Cruz, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Cameron Diaz.

De la Renta, who was born in the Dominican Republic, worked with the top design house before branching out on his own. He first apprenticed with Cristobal Balenciaga before working in Paris for Balmain and Lanvin.

He is survived by his second wife Annette Reed. De la Renta’s first wife, former French Vogue editor Francois Langlade died in 1983.
