Mr Abbott's comments came during a 2GB radio interview on Tuesday, where he sought to justify Australian co-operation with the US against ISIS forces in Iraq.

"The atrocities that were committed by the Nazis, by the communists and others, they were ashamed of them, they tried to cover them up," said Mr Abbott.

He added, "This mob, by contrast, as soon as they've done something gruesome and ghastly and unspeakable, they're advertising it on the internet for all to see which makes them, in my mind, nothing but a death cult."

The Prime Minister has been laying out the case for Australia's involvement in the fight against ISIS following social media images showing its citizens fighting in Iraq and Syria.

"That's why I think it's quite proper to respond with extreme force against people like this," he said.

One of the images showing a 7-year-old Australian boy allegedly holding the head of an ISIS victim was published on newspaper front pages around the world.
