Lady Gaga had a big night at the MTV Video Music Awards — opening the show with “Applause,” coming to the defense of One Direction — and a lot of prep apparently went into it.

The pop star’s photographer pal Terry Richardson documented — and then tweeted pics of — her prep before the awards, including rehearsals and costume and wig selection.
Because it’s Gaga, there was also some naked stretching, nose ring adjustment, and the moment when she caked her buttocks in gold.
