Bully Granted New PG-13 Rating After Documentary Removes Swear Words

Truth rating: 10

(Weinstein Co.)

Bully will have a PG-13 rating when it expands into more theaters next week, it was announced on Thursday.

The documentary, which had been given an R by The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) due to multiple uses of the word “f**k,” was edited in order to receive the revised rating.

The Weinstein Company, the film’s distributor, initially attempted to fight the MPAA’s ruling on the grounds that the anti-bullying documentary deserved to be seen by children across America because of its positive, educational message.

When the MPAA refused to back down, the documentary was released unrated, but the Weinstein Company has since changed course, removing three instances of the F-word.

A key scene that features the swear word several times, however, remains unedited.

A number of celebrities, ranging from Justin Bieber to Ellen DeGeneres, have voiced support for the film.
