Appearing as Rey during a segment of Weekend Update with Seth Meyers, Wiig, 38, answered critics of the singer's hugely criticized January 14 SNL performance, which NBC's Brian Williams declared "one of the worst outings in SNL history."

"I thought [I sang two songs], but based on the public's response [to my performance], I must have clubbed a baby seal while singing the Taliban national anthem," Wiig, as Rey, told Meyers. "I am not here to defend my performance. The public has spoken and I have to accept that."

Wiig later went on to address a few of Rey's biggest criticisms. "These critics are absolutely right. The music stage on Saturday Night Live is hallowed ground, and I failed to reach the high bar set by past guests like Bubba Sparxxx, The Baha Men and Shaggy," Wiig said, nailing Rey's mannerisms to a T.
"I think people thought I was stiff, distant and weird, but there's a perfectly good explanation for that: I am stiff, distant and weird!" she said.
