Based on a true story, the upcoming film showcases Hudgens’ character Apple escaping her drug-addicted prostitute mom (Rosario Dawson), seeking help from the wealthy father who abandoned her (Brendan Fraser), and coping with an unexpected pregnancy as she tries to fit into a foster home.

It’s a role unlike Hudgens as ever played before, and as Gossip Cop previously reported, she actually lived in a homeless shelter for two weeks to prepare for the project.

Hudgens debuted the trailer on Facebook on Tuesday, with the movie set to hit theaters January 24.

Vanessa Hudgens: “I Have Never Liked Partying” and I “Steer Clear” of Drugs

Vanessa Hudgens clears up some misconceptions in the latest issue of the UK’s Cosmo on Campus.

“I have never liked ‘partying.’ I love dancing, but that’s as far as it goes,” says the actress.

Hudgens continues, “It’s tough because a lot of clubs are everything I loathe, especially in L.A. They’re always very ego-filled and people get up to mischief. It’s just not a pure environment.”

The Machete Kills star also insists she stays “away” from drugs, “because I know it’s smart to steer clear,” but admits to indulging in alcohol.

“If there’s a problem, a bottle of wine goes a long way. It’s the same after a long week of filming — a glass of wine and a bit of chocolate makes me happy,” she says.

Hudgens also relies on her “quite protective” best friend, High School Musical co-star Ashley Tisdale to be by her side when things get tough.

“Ashley always says she wants me to be more cautious,” confesses the starlet. “She thinks I’m too trusting. I think I’m fine the way I am, but she thinks I have a tendency to float around on a cloud, which I kind of do.”

One day, Hudgens just may float herself into a college setting.

“I got into acting young and I wasn’t as fascinated with learning as I am now. The older I get, the more curious I become,” she tells the magazine.

And what would be her major?

“I’d like to study film or photography one day,” says Hudgens.

Vanessa Hudgens Talks Cocaine Rumors and Wanting an Oscar in Marie Claire

Truth rating: 10

11:27 am, September 9th, 2013

(Marie Claire)

Vanessa Hudgens opens up in the October issue of Marie Claire about cocaine rumors, money, and wanting an Oscar.

“A sense of knowing I’m part of something bigger than myself has allowed me to enjoy life more,” the actress tells the magazine. “And not worry about the little things. Like paparazzi.”

Of course, unwanted photographs have been a part of Hudgens’ story, including a nude picture scandal several years ago and a more recent Coachella visit when she was spotted indulging in a substance she claimed was white chocolate rather than cocaine.

She says, “I couldn’t do anything but laugh. It’s amazing how people like to create something out of absolutely nothing. I am human like everyone else. I am aware that there are people who look up to me. When mistakes are made, they aren’t intentional, and I constantly push myself to be a better person.”

Hudgens has since become very protective.

“It’s one thing to have a chat with someone, it’s another to have them know your deepest, darkest secrets,” she tells Marie Claire. “Just because people enjoy watching you in films doesn’t mean they have to know everything about your entire life.”

Hudgens grew up far from the wealth and glamour of Hollywood with working-class parents and thrift shop clothing.

She recalls, “Money was a big thing. My parents drove me up to L.A. [for auditions], which cost a lot because of gas, and took out loans so that we could move from location to location to be close to L.A. The family definitely struggled. They were very supportive of me. They gave up a lot so that I could get to where I am.”

Her friend Selena Gomez says Hudgens has not given into cynicism.

“She’s not jaded at all,” explains Gomez. “The person you see and talk to is the same person I talk to.”

“I’m so comfortable with myself — honing in on what I love and what makes me powerful,” she says of the darker roles she’s been taking recently. “Things I’ve been doing lately, I’m super-proud of. So I don’t really care if someone doesn’t like it, because I love it.”

Hudgens explains, “I love finding things that scare me and doing them. That’s how you grow.”

What does she want in the future?

“A vintage Mustang, kids, and an Oscar,” she says.
