The music producer sounded off to Jay Leno on everything from Miley Cyrus’ penchant for twerking to putting together One Direction, but his most candid comments came when talking about his “X Factor” colleagues.

LL Cool J appeared on Thursday’s “The Tonight Show,” where the rapper-actor opened up about “Accidental Racist,” his controversial duet with Brad Paisley.

“I feel good,” the performer told Jay Leno, despite the largely negative reaction to the track, which addresses racial stereotypes and lingering attitudes regarding slavery and the South.

The “NCIS: Los Angeles” star continued, “The song wasn’t perfect. You can’t fit 300 or 400 years of history into a three or four minute song.”

Cool J went on to note that he “can’t defend the song, but I can clarify my intentions.”

“I in no way would ever compare the history of the Confederate flag… with a do-rag,” he said, referencing one of the lyrics. “However, when you think about a kid like Trayvon Martin and you think about some of the things that happen in society based on clothing, when you put it in this proper context, it makes sense.”

Check out the rest of his explanation in the video below, and tell us what you think.
