BOX OFFICE

(Warner Bros.)

Audiences are still flocking to Middle-Earth.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is #1 at the box office for the second straight week, with early estimates putting the fantasy adaptation at $32 million.

That will be enough to beat two new releases — the Tom Cruise action flick Jack Reacher (projected to hit $18 million), and the Judd Apatow-directed comedy This Is 40 ($12 million).

The animated Rise of the Guardians should place fourth with about $7 million, ahead of Lincoln ($5.5 million) the Monsters Inc. 3D re-release ($5 million), and the Seth RogenBarbra Streisand road comedy The Guilt Trip ($4.5 million).

Life of Pi and Skyfall are both tracking toward $4 million weekends, and will battle for eighth place.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 should stay in the Top 10 with a $2.8 million haul.

The Hobbit Tops Box Office, Breaks December Records

BOX OFFICE

(Warner Bros.)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to win the weekend box office easily, and is projected to become the biggest December debut in history.

The first installment of Peter Jackson’s new fantasy trilogy is currently on pace for $90 million in its opening weekend, which would break the $77 million December debuts for I Am Legend and Avatar in previous years.

Skyfall and Rise of the Guardians are battling for a distant second place, with both movies tracking toward $7 million, just ahead of Lincoln ($6.5 million).

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 is in a tight race with Life of Pi for the #5 spot — each film is looking at roughly $5 million in receipts.

The closely packed chart continues with Wreck-It Ralph ($3.2 million), Playing for Keeps ($3 million), Red Dawn ($2.5 million) and Silver Linings Playbook ($2 million).
