Randy Travis’ health has taken another turn for the worse.

The performer, who has been hospitalized in critical condition with complications from viral cardiomyopathy, suffered a stroke on Wednesday.

His rep tells us in a statement:

As a complication of his congestive heart failure, Mr. Randy Travis has suffered a stroke and is currently undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He is in critical condition. We will have updates as they become available. His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support.

On Tuesday, Travis had a cardiovascular device implanted in his chest.

Randy Travis underwent heart surgery after being admitted to a Texas hospital in critical condition with complications from viral cardiomyopathy, according to his family.

The country singer’s sister-in-law says in a statement, “We have been told he has had surgery. Our prayers are going out to him because my husband just had a heart attack last year, so it is in their family.”

She continues, “Their mother passed away at an early age with her heart, so it is like these boys are following right in their footsteps. My prayers are with them. That’s all I can say right now.”

Viral cardiomyopathy is a weakening of the heart muscles due to infection.

Travis’ next scheduled concert, Wednesday’s show in South Dakota, has been canceled.
