‘The Sopranos’: Tony’s Fate Still A Mystery? – ARTICLE

Is fictional mob boss Tony Soprano dead or alive?

That's the question people are asking this week after a host of outlets picked up Vox.com's interview with "The Sopranos" Executive Producer David Chase, where he seemed to suggest that the character, played by James Gandolfini, survived on the show. But now, the website reported that the producer's rep has issued a statement, which appears to continue the mystery of what happened in that diner after the HBO show cut to black in its series finale in 2007.

"A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying,' Tony Soprano is not dead,' is inaccurate," the rep said in the statement, posted on Vox.com. "There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true. As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, "Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point." To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of The Sopranos raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer."

The original quote that prompted all the headlines this week? Chase was asked if Tony was dead.

"No," Chase told Vox. "No he isn't."
