The "Automatic For The People" Restaurant Might Shut Down

Weaver D's, the Georgia soul food spot that inspired the title of R.E.M.'s biggest album, has fallen on hard times. Insert your own “Everybody Hurts” joke here.

Weaver D's has been an Athens, Georgia institution for 26 years, and the restaurant's motto, "automatic for the people" inspired the title of R.E.M.'s 1992 album. You know, the one with "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon" and "Nightswimming." Despite that connection, the eatery's business has been very slow in the past two years and owner Dexter Weaver has fallen so far behind on his bills that he may be forced to close forever.

Weaver's story is heart breaking. "A lot of people out of work, a lot of plants cut back," he told 11 Alive. "We were just not getting a lot of regulars. We waited for the students to come, and that didn't happen. We figured the football games would bring people in, and that didn't happen either."

It's unrealistic to expect a steady amount of R.E.M.-related tourism, but by all accounts, Weaver D's has amazing food. Here are some meals served at the restaurant:
