After seven high-profile years and six children with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt made things official at last when confirming his engagement to the actress Friday.

Though they've at times waffled over the idea of marriage -- and publicly said they wouldn't tie the knot until gay marriage is legal across the U.S. -- Pitt, 48, and Jolie, 36, decided to get hitched at the urging of their kids: Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 3.

"We'd actually like to [get married]," Pitt -- who went public with his romance with Jolie in 2005 after he divorced Jennifer Aniston -- told The Hollywood Reporter in January. "It seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren't going to do it till everyone can. But I don't think we'll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment."

Indeed, this spring Pitt couldn't hold out any longer -- and proposed to his longtime love with a massive diamond he personally designed with the couple's jeweler Robert Procop.

The couple's engagement "is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy," Pitt's manager Cynthia Pett-Dante said in a statement Friday, two days after Jolie flashed her newest accessory during a visit to LACMA with Pitt and Pax.
