The Hunger Games Sets Midnight Records

BOX OFFICE

(Lionsgate)

The first box office numbers for The Hunger Games have started to trickle in, and — not surprisingly — the film has already broken a few records.

The movie’s midnight release raked in $19.75 million, making it the highest-grossing midnight opening ever for a non-sequel.

Even with other franchises’ sequels factored in, the Lionsgate flick, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, is now the seventh biggest midnight opening of all time.

The Hunger Games also achieved the highest IMAX opening ever for a 2D, non-summer and non-holiday film.

Estimates place the film’s three-day gross at the low- to mid-$100 million mark, though that number is sure to fluctuate over the weekend.
