Stay Strong, the new documentary about Demi Lovato‘s life since she left a treatment center last year, premiered on MTV Tuesday night.

And, as promised, the one-hour special provided a candid and intimate look at Lovato’s struggles, which have most recently included balancing her recovery with her growing career.

The singer-actress, who previously revealed she suffers from an eating disorder and self-harms, is seen preparing for a new tour – her first since her meltdown in 2010.

“I feel like going back on tour is facing my fears and finishing what I started,” Lovato says.

Before entering rehab, Lovato says she “had so many issues underneath that needed to be taken care of and we kept just putting Band-Aids over it. It literally ended up driving me insane.”

Lovato, who is seen in the documentary returning to her treatment center in Illinois to talk to current patients, says she initially fought her parents about seeking help, but now views it as life-changing – and life-saving.

But even though Lovato has come a long way since her time in treatment, she points out that “an addiction is an addiction… and you’re gonna have days when you’re gonna struggle.”

When Lovato celebrates Thanksgiving – a “big food holiday” – with her family, the footage shows her carefully eating her meal and talking on the phone with her sponsor.

“I cannot tell you that I haven’t thrown up since treatment. I cannot tell you that I haven’t cut myself since treatment,” she admits. “This is a daily battle that I will face for the rest of my life.”
