The producer behind Rihanna and Chris Brown‘s controversial “Birthday Cake (Remix)” is speaking out.
Appearing on MTV’s “RapFix” Wednesday, hip-hop producer The-Dream said having Brown appear on Rihanna’s track was entirely her idea.
He said Rihanna called him one day and casually said, “I think I’m gonna put Chris on it.”
The-Dream told MTV “of course” he was wary of the backlash that was sure to come from the musical reunion, but that he trusted Rihanna because “I know she’s not crazy.”
He explains, “My thought was you’ve been thinking about this, you’ve already thought it out, so evidently you know what reaction you gonna get.”
He added that if Rihanna has forgiven Brown for what he did to her, then others should “fall in line” with her decision.
As for Brown, The-Dream offers, ”I think he understands what happened. I don’t think he’s… brushing it off like it’s nothing. Most of the time, the things that I see him do is out of defense… because the defense comes from, ‘I know it wasn’t cool, and I understand that.’”
He adds, “He’s kid, and she was a kid when this happened.”
