PHOENIX, Arizona—Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told Republicans at the county Lincoln Day luncheon that he will reveal the result of his investigation into President Barack Obama's birth certificate in a press conference next month.

"We'll be having a press conference on March 1st to announce the result of the investigation," Arpaio said, saying it was conducted in an unbiased manner. "We might possibly clear the president, but you'll have to see on March 1st.," he added.

Arpaio brushed off criticism for keeping the "birther" speculation alive. "I take my job as elected sheriff seriously, and listen to what the people want me to do," he said.

Arpaio, who had endorsed Rick Perry in the race for president, declined to endorse one of the remaining candidates, saying "the voters will decide."

He announced that he met with Rick Santorum for 20 minutes before his speech to the group, and told reporters afterward that he briefed him on the Obama investigation, "as a matter of fairness in case he wouldn't want me to support him."
