Kate Beckinsale’s vampire-action sequel Underworld: Awakening is expected to win the weekend box office with approximately $23 million.
That figure would put it ahead of another new release, Red Tails, which is on pace for a $17 million haul.
Two holdovers – the Mark Wahlberg flick Contraband ($12 million) and post-9/11 drama Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close ($10 million) – should fill the #3 and #4 spots, respectively.
Mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano’s starring debut, Haywire, is in a tight race with Beauty and the Beast 3D for fifth place.
Both movies are tracking toward $8.5 million.
Holdovers Joyful Noise ($6 million), Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol ($5 million), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ($4 million) and The Iron Lady ($3.5 million) round out the chart.
