Horse Fly Named After Beyonce

The horse fly got its name, Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae , on account of its booty-ful diva feature — a big gold butt and for being the “all-time diva of flies,” according to researchers.

"It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly's abdomen that led me to name this fly in honor of the performer," says the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization's Bryan Lessard. But it also gave him "the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy — the naming of species." The Scaptia (Plinthina) was collected in 1981, the year Beyonce was born.
